• A premiere date for Rick and Morty season seven is set to be revealed next week.
• Justin Roiland departed the show early this year following domestic abuse allegations.
• One of the show’s executive producers says that Rick and Morty is “even better” without Roiland.

The premiere date for the seventh season of Rick and Morty will be announced next week according to Adult Swim and the official Rick and Morty X account. Unlike the previous seasons this will be the first without Justin Roiland who voiced both the titular Rick, Morty, and many other characters.

Season seven is set to run sometime this year, but despite this, Adult Swim has been careful to not reveal who will be replacing Roiland as the voice of the main characters. This information is still unknown and as of yet, no audio of the new voices has been released.

Roiland, who was one of the show’s co-creators alongside Dan Harmon, departed the show at the beginning of the year after he was charged with domestic violence in 2020 following an incident involving a woman he was living with at the time. Adult Swim publically declared that they had parted ways with Roiland, who was also the creator of similar animation series like Solar Opposites, and videogames like High on Life.

Roiland has since also been dropped from Solar Opposites even though he was cleared of the original charge in March due to “insufficient evidence.” Roiland’s parts are set to be replaced by Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey).

The executive producer of Rick and Morty Steve Levy said that without Roiland’s involvement, the show has only improved in quality.

“The work that we’re doing across the board has only gotten better. When the new season comes out, we’ll focus on how amazing it all turned out. We hope the fans will realize that this is the same old show, maybe even better!” he said, per Geek Tyrant.

“We had a rug pulled from underneath us. The only people we could lean on were each other. It would have been very easy to just say, ‘I’m done and I don’t want to do anything with this show anymore.’ But our crew said, ‘No, we’re not going to let one person drag down all of our hard work.'”

Despite Roiland being cleared of domestic abuse charges, there were considerable allegations made against him for inappropriate workplace behaviour at Adult Swim. It remains to be seen if Rick and Morty, at one point the most popular western animation in the world, can reach new heights without the creative talents of Roiland.
