PlayStation 5 Slim spotted in the wild?

  • In a video posted to X over the weekend, one user showcased the chassis of a console purported to be the PlayStation 5 Slim.
  • The device shown in the video looks slightly slimmer than the regular PS5, but not by much.
  • It is also believed the PS5 Slim may sport a removable disc drive.

Take the following with a generous helping of salt, as photos and videos surfaced online over the weekend reportedly showcasing the chassis of the new PlayStation 5 Slim console.

While Sony is yet to confirm the console’s official development or intended release, during July’s hearings between the FTC and Microsoft, the latter believed a PS5 Slim console was on the way for later this year.

The Japanese company’s gaming division is yet to comment on the validity of those Microsoft predictions, but the video below seems to add a degree of credence to the claims.

The video, uploaded onto X (formerly Twitter) by user @BwE_Dev, although it is unclear whether they are the ones actually holding the chassis of the supposed slim console.

Speaking of which, the device does look slimmer than the digital and disc version of the PS5, but only marginally. As The Verge points out, the console appears to be shorter too.

As for the other notable details on the device, a diagonal line splits the console into two parts, with the PlayStation logo, and a pair of USB Type-C ports found on the smaller portion of the split up front. The larger split portion is where the slot for a disc is found, with it also being the thickest portion of the console, ultimately belying the slimness of its design.

If this video does indeed showcase the PlayStation 5 Slim, players might be disappointed in terms of what they see, especially as this iteration is nowhere near as slim as what Sony mustered for the PS4 Slim back in 2016.

While we await official word from the company on the PS5 Slim’s existence, those interested in picking one up will likely have to save up quite a bit. This as the aforementioned FTC vs. Microsoft hearings suggested a recommended retail price of $400, which is similar to what you can purchase the digital edition PS5 for in the States.

Whether that will translate to the same in other regions remains to be seen. Hopefully, though, should Sony choose to release the PS5 Slim later this year, scarcity of supply will not be a problem, as it was with the 2020 models.
