Threads will soon be more like X

  • Over the weekend Mark Zuckerberg took to Threads to announce that a browser-based version of the social media app will arrive soon.
  • He also confirmed that a better search is on the way for the platform.
  • It looks like Threads is taking on X both online and offline too, with a date set between Musk and Zuckerberg for their “cage match”.

It seems like the fervour that saw Threads set a record number of sign ups in only a couple days has died down. This as the Instagram companion app is rather limited and cannot stand on its own in its current guise.

This is something that Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg is acutely aware of, as he announced the imminent arrival of some new features for the companion app over the weekend. He did so, on Threads itself of course, noting that a browser or desktop-based version of the app is in the works and set to arrive soon.

Zuckerberg also made mention of a search function making its way in the coming weeks.

“A good week for Threads. The community here is on the trajectory I expect to build a vibrant long term app. Lots of work ahead but excited about the team’s pace of shipping. Search and web coming in the next few weeks,” he posted on the platform.

As such, there is not much in terms of a tangible date for the launch of these new features, but regardless it looks like Meta is trying to give Threads more features in order to better compete with Twitter (now X).

The replies to the post from Zuckerberg asked for more elements too, such as hashtags, which are believed capable of helping users build communities with shared interests. All of which, sounds a lot like X.

Those three aspects alone will not be enough for Threads to be a true competitor, however, as the Instagram companion app still needs to offer a lot more other than simply not being X in order to win over more users after the initial surge in interest.

Whether Meta can make that happens remains to be seen, but it is clear that Threads and X will be going toe-to-toe both offline and online. This as Elon Musk confirmed the “cage match” between himself and Zuckerberg is set for 26th August, although the latter party is not overly convinced the fight will actually happen.

This especially as Musk followed up his tweets regarding the fight with noting that he needs to go for scans to his neck and back, which may require surgery.

Either way, it looks like Zuck is ready to go now, while Musk keeps on stalling.

“I’m ready today. I suggested Aug 26 when he first challenged, but he hasn’t confirmed. Not holding my breath,” replied Zuckerberg when asked recently about the fight.
