MTN South Africa promotes two of its own to executive positions

  • MTN South Africa has appointed a new Enterprise Business Officer and Executive: Channels in Commercial Operations.
  • Tumi Chamayou takes up the C-suite role after many years of driving growth at MTN South Africa.
  • Ernest Galelekile takes up the Executive: Channels in Commercial Operations role after also spending many years at the mobile network.

One of the stalwarts of the South African mobile network ecosystem – MTN South Africa – has announced an internal promotion that could lead to massive gains for the business.

That promotion is of Tumi Chamayou to the position of Chief Enterprise Business Officer for South Africa from Group Executive for MTN’s Enterprise Business Unit effective 1st October.

Since joining that division in 2018 Chamayou has overseen growth across the Multinational and Large Enterprise segments. She also added the SME client segment teams to her gamut and between 2020 and 2022 drove growth of 28 percent year on year.

“Tumi has made a significant contribution to our Group Enterprise Business Unit, and in our pursuit of realising our strategic goals of fostering business expansion, revolutionising customer satisfaction, and revitalising employee involvement, it’s paramount we enlist individuals with the requisite capabilities, which describes Tumi to a tee. I am confident that her extensive expertise will play a significant role in elevating our commercial and operational facets as we endeavor to provide an enhanced customer experience,” Charles Molapisi, chief executive officer of MTN South Africa said in a statement.

Truthfully, we wouldn’t be shocked to hear that Chamayou ended up taking the CEO position at MTN SA in a few years. The executive has an MBA in Strategy, Marketing, and Finance from the University of the Witwatersrand and spent over 10 years at Ericsson. During her time at the telecommunications firm, she rose to the rank of Vice President of Strategy, Marketing, and Communications.

The big yellow operator has also announced the appointment of Ernest Galelekile as the new Executive: Channels in Commercial Operations effective 1st September. Galelekile will be responsible for overseeing the strategic development and management of distribution channels across the organisation.

Ernest Galelekile

Much like Chamayou, Galelekile has been at MTN since 2017 and has held positions at a Group and South Africa level.

“Ernest and Tumi’s appointments reflect our commitment to fostering internal talent and harnessing the expertise of individuals who understand the intricacies of our industry, poising us to elevate our operations and make great strides in our mission of connecting people, businesses, and communities to SA’s best network in every corner of the country,” adds Molapisi.
