iPhone 15 gets Dynamic Island and USB Type-C

  • Apple has officially revealed its new iPhone 15 lineup, which includes the regular 6.1″ model and 6.7″ Plus.
  • The new devices add the Dynamic Island featured on last year’s iPhone 14 Pro offerings, as well as the same A16 Bionic chipset.
  • Apple has also ditched Lighting in favour of USB Type-C in order to appease EU regulators.

Anticipated for a number of months now, Apple has pulled the covers off of its latest smartphone lineup – the iPhone 15 series – which features four different models.

These are the regular 6.1″ iPhone 15, the larger 6.7″ Plus, and two high-specced Pro flavours.

Sticking with the first two though, and there is a mix of iterative and significant changes.

Let’s focus on the significant ones for now, as the “standard” iPhone 15 models add the Dynamic Island to the mix, which Apple says was a hit among last year’s iPhone 14 Pro users. We’re on the fence when it comes to that claim, but when it comes to this latest lineup of phones, the Island is here to stay.

Added to this is the integration of USB Type-C ports for charging, which is a move that Apple has long put off in favour of its own Lightning ports, but continued pressure from the EU to standardise has resulted in the switch.

“Both models use a USB‑C connector, a universally accepted standard for charging and transferring data, allowing the same cable to charge iPhone, Mac, iPad, and the updated AirPods Pro (2nd generation). Users can also charge AirPods or Apple Watch directly from iPhone with the USB‑C connector,” the company highlighted in a press release.

Looking at some of the middling elements, Apple has once again “recycled” the chip from last year’s Pro model for this year’s regular iterations, with the A16 Bionic powering things here.

Still, Apple is touting its improvements over last year’s offerings.

“With two high-performance cores that use 20 percent less power and four high-efficiency cores, the 6-core CPU is faster than the previous generation and easily handles intensive tasks while delivering extraordinary battery life. The 5-core GPU has 50 percent more memory bandwidth for smooth graphics when streaming videos and playing games,” it pointed out.

Looking at some of the aesthetics, a colour-infused back design in present, with new techniques utilised in the creation of the camera housing. Sticking with colours, five colours will be made available at launch – Black, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Pink as the new variant – all pictured above.

As for the imaging side of things a new 48MP lens is pulling duty as the primary shooter on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus.

Here Apple says the new lens captures, “sharp photos and videos while capturing fine details, with a quad-pixel sensor and 100 percent Focus Pixels for fast autofocus. Using the power of computational photography, the Main camera gives users a new 24MP super-high-resolution default, offering incredible image quality at a practical file size ideal for storing and sharing.”

Now for pricing and availability, and while those local details are still in the offing, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus go up for pre-order this Friday in the US, starting from $799 and $899 respectively.
