Department of Forestry and Environment opens 2024 bursaries

  • The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is accepting applications for its bursary programme in 2024.
  • It will cover R50 000 of a wide range of modules and courses and there will be an internship programme after studies have been completed.
  • Only grade 12, tertiary students and young people not currently employed can apply.

A new set of government-funded bursaries have been unveiled by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. The bursaries are for the 2024 academic year and are in line with the mandate of the department, that is, to oversee the natural environment.

The department is looking to fund students interested in environmental programmes, forestry management, regulatory compliance sector monitoring, fisheries management, oceans and coasts, biodiversity and conservation, climate change, and chemicals and waste management. The maximum amount of the bursary is R50 000.

The bursaries only apply to students at institutions of higher learning or those currently doing their matric year (grade 12), and of course are not employed.

Currently available bursaries from the department include:

  • BSc Degree Environmental Management BSc Hons Geographical Information System ND in Project Management,
  • Study fields linked to Conversation, Resource Economics, Development Studies and Social Innovation,
  • B Degree/ ND in Civil Engineering,
  • B Degree/ ND in Environmental Engineering,
  • B Degree/ ND Building Management & Quantity Surveying B Degree/ ND in Architectural Studies,
  • Diploma in Forestry,
  • Advance Diploma in Forestry Management Honours in Natural Resource Management BSc Forestry and Natural Resources,
  • BSc Wood Science MSc in Forestry,
  • MSc Forestry and Natural Resources Sciences Diploma/Degree in Environmental Law,
  • LLB (Major courses administrative law, legislative drafting, Environmental Law)/ LLM,
  • B.A Law,
  • Diploma or Degree in Paralegal,
  • Bachelor of Environmental Sciences (majoring in Animal and wildlife) BSc in Chemistry,

In an announcement, the department says that once your studies are complete with support from the bursary, there is mandatory participation in an internship programme.

When applying, the department says that you need to indicate clearly your study field of choice from the above options. It is also looking for a letter of motivation, certified copies of academic records (recent and previous), certified identity document copies, latest grade 12 results, proof of parents or guardian’s income, proof if parents are deceased and affidavit if parents are not working.
