The most interesting buys at Comic Con Africa 2023

Comic Con Africa is here again and, as always, Hypertext is boots on the ground to find the coolest stuff you can buy.

Like most conventions Comic Con Africa 2023 is packed with items you can’t find elsewhere, and great sales that may be the cheapest way to get your shopping fix.

Below check out the items that caught our eye as we walked around but remember this is just a tiny sliver of what is actually available.

KFC Sauces

Readers may be experiencing déjà vu as we also featured these sauces on our list from 2022. Now, a year later, and the sauces are back as a convention exclusive yet again.

We can report that the price for each sauce has increased from R50 to R60, but we still recommend picking these up to try them.

We bought one of each last year and found the dunked sauce to be our favourite, but of course your taste may differ.

Price: R60 each.

Place: Outdoor eating area between Hall 6 and Hall 7.

Star Wars The Black Series Mandalorian Darksaber

Equally expensive and cool. If you’ve been following the Darksaber through various Star Wars properties this is your chance to own the high quality, 1:1 replica from The Black Series.

This same booth is also selling other Mandalorian items such as the Black Series Din Djarin helmet (R4 799) and various versions of Grogu.

Price: R8 399 each.

Place: Gaming & Chill Lounge in Hall 5.

Electronic Die-Cast Poké Ball Replicas

The first discounted item on our list is the various electronic and die-case Poké Ball Replicas that are sold by the Nintendo Store.

Like the Darksaber you are paying more for an item that is full 1:1 scale and made out of higher quality materials.

Each Poké Ball comes in a very premium display box. The ball itself has sensors to light up on touch or by movement adding a bit more functionality to what is essentially a high grade and expensive display piece.

Price: R1 999 (was R2 499)

Place: Nintendo in Hall 5

Squid Game figures

Squid Game’s legacy continues with these figures you can pick up to recreate your favourite scenes or, more likely, put on display.

We really like that, for the masked figures, you can pick up all all the different shapes on the masks.

Prices: R800 for the Masked Soldiers / Workers / Managers | R1 100 for the Young-Hee Doll.

Place: Hobby Island in Hall 6.

Mega Construx Castle Grayskull

This is the best deal we saw at Comic Con Africa 2023. We’ve been keeping this buildable version of Castle Grayskull in our periphery and this is the cheapest we have ever seen it in South Africa.

For those who haven’t kept up with the world of building bricks, Mega Construx is the updated brand for Mega Bloks, the old competitor to LEGO. Along with this name change Mega Construx also picked up a lot of licences such as Masters of the Universe you can see here, Halo, Pokémon, Tesla and more. For more on this, and for a discussion on the Mega Construx quality versus LEGO, see our review of the large scale Tesla Cybertruck model here.

Back to Castle Grayskull and this set comes with 3 508 pieces that build three floors and six areas. There are also six “micro action figures”, as Mega Construx calls them. These are of He-Man, Skeletor, Man-At-Arms, Beast Man, the Goddess and Sorceress, which is exclusive to this set.

Again we’ve only ever seen it available in South Africa for several thousand Rand more, so pick this one up before it sells out.

Price: R2 500 (was R4 099)

Place: Sirius Pets in Hall 6
