We tried the exclusive KFC menu at Comic Con Africa

As was the case last year, KFC is one of the headlining sponsors of Comic Con Africa 2023. For this year’s iteration, the fast food chain has created an exclusive KFC menu of items for Comic Con attendees to enjoy, after they purchase them of course.

For those wondering what’s on offer for 2023, which includes a menu of close to a dozen exclusive items, we bought the entire menu for a taste testing session by the Hypertext team.

We list each item below, what it consists of, and how it tastes.

Scroll down to see how the exclusive menu stacks up.

Kentucky Fried Oreo

Ice cream, chocolate sauce, sprinkles and deep fried Oreos. How can you go wrong?

The deep fried Oreos are, of course, the star of the show. While delicious and a unique blend of sweet and savoury, it doesn’t really taste like an Oreo, just a generic and very sweet deep frid ball.

Still worth getting but may disappoint hardcore lovers of the Oreo taste.

AFK Chachos

Basically nachos but with chicken tenders instead of nacho chips. The tenders are covered with a chees sauce, chopped Jalapenos and chopped tomatoes.

This is exactly what it says on the tin with little surprise, but still a tasty snack.

Avatar Skins

In a meme, I mean it’s alright, but not really something I would order again. There is very little to criticise here given you have KFC chicken skins encased in KFC’s batter but it does get a bit long-in-the-tooth after a while. Overall, the chicken skins are tasty just eat them while they’re hot.

Pretty in Pink Meal

The Barbie hype is still going as it would appear. For this Pretty in Pink meal, there is a KFC Crunch burger with a Pink coloured bun. This is paired with a small serving of Sprinkle Pops, Chips, and a Pretty in Pink milkshake. All the food tastes like normal KFC fare, but the milkshake has a weird artificial aftertaste that we were not fans of.

The Other Guy Burger

This was hands down the team’s favourite exclusive KFC menu item. It is sizeable with two crumbed chicken fillets, two slices of cheese, and some chopped jalapeño peppers to add a bit of a kick. Of all the burgers we tried, this was the one we’d order again.

The Galaxy Boba

This was a decent drink. The clear liquid is Sprite or some sort of comparable lemonade, with the purple boba tasting like grapes. Given how hot it will be over the weekend, this might be one of the most worthwhile exclusive drinks to pick up.

Yum Yum It is

This Yoda-inspired milkshake has a hint of malted caramel taste to it. In fact, the flavour is a little bit lacking in our opinion, and we would have appreciated something that gave your tastebuds a bit more of a workout. It is also quite good for sharing, with the malted chocolate balls and cones capable of being split between two.

Hero Meal

This is for all intents and purposes a Colonel burger in our books. The only differences are the black sesame seeds on the bun, and the addition of some finely sliced red onion in the burger topping sauce. This too lacks a bit of punch to make it memorable or recommendable.

The Doom Burger

If you enjoy KFC’s Dunked items, this is the burger for you. It is a essentially a Dunked Colonel burger, with a black bun. It terms of flavours it hits the right marks, but the bun is a little structurally unsound. It places seond behind The Other Guy burger in terms of our favourite item.

Ghost Pepper Strips

The last thing we tried out was the Ghost Pepper wings. We were initially hesitant to try it out, but the spice is pleasant and heat is punchy without lasting too long. For South African palettes it is definitely manageable, and should scratch the itch of any spice fiends out there.
