• The Gauteng Provincial Government will assist youth between the ages of 17 to 34 with getting their learner’s licences on 19th October.
• This initiative is part of the province’s efforts during Transport Month, and looks to make young people more employable.
• It is being run in partnership with the Xavier Junction License and Testing Centre in Johannesburg.

October just so happens to be Transport Month here in South Africa, and with this in mind, the Gauteng Provincial Government is officially launching its Learner’s License Project this week.

More specifically tomorrow on 19th October, partnering with the Xavier Junction License and Testing Centre in Johannesburg to do so.

“The ‘Wrong Side of the Road’ Learners License Project is a campaign that aims to assist young people between the ages of 17-34 with administrative fees for securing learners’ licenses across TISH areas (Townships, Informal Settlements and Hostels) in Gauteng,” the Provincial Government noted in a press statement.

Getting a learner’s licence in Gauteng usually costs R108 for the booking and a R60 issuing fee if you pass the test. 

The initiative, along with assisting youth overcome the hurdle of cost often associated with obtaining a learner’s licence, is also using this opportunity to promote responsible driving habits, which will prove critical with the festive season on the way.

The other advantage of such an initiative, is the potential impact it will have in terms of improving the employability of youth, many of which would need a learner’s licence once entering the job market. While not every job requires a licence, having one could prove invaluable down the line, depending on what field you’re entering.
