Minecraft easily the best selling videogame of all time

  • In the build up to its 15th anniversary next year, Minecraft has become the best selling videogame of all time.
  • Mojang says it has sold 300 million copies of the game since its release.
  • The game in second place is Grand Theft Auto V at 185 million copies.

Minecraft is celebrating a bunch of milestones of late, with the wildly popular game having recently sold more 300 million copies. It cements its place as the best selling videogame of all time, with the competition nowhere near it.

As Engadget points out, Grand Theft Auto V features a distant second at 185 million, but what makes this recent milestone all the more impressive, is the fact that Minecraft passed the 200 million mark only three years ago in 2020, serving as a testament to its continued popularity and significant increased interest in the game over the past few years.

The developer behind the game, Mojang Studios, shared the news via its Live 2023 event held yesterday. The announcement was also framed by the fact that Minecraft will be celebrating its 15th anniversary next year.

“It might feel like Minecraft’s blocky biomes have been around since the beginning of time, but Minecraft Live reminded us all that Minecraft is turning 15 next year! Together we’ve been crafting pickaxes (15 million of them!) discovering diamonds (6.7 million!), and slaying 15 million skeletons. Just recently we also crossed 300 million copies sold, a milestone no-one could have dreamed of when we were all building our first dirt houses! I hope there’ll be cake to celebrate our wonderful community, and our soon-to-be fifteen years mining, crafting, and respawning together,” highlighted Mojang’s Sophie Austin in a blog post.

Austin also detailed some of the upcoming DLC and projects that the game will be bringing to players.

To that end, the Star Wars: Path of the Jedi DLC drops on 7th November. “This DLC is set during the Clone Wars and you will train with Grand Master Yoda, Mace Windu, and the other Jedi as a young Padawan. Rise to the rank of Jedi Knight and set out on missions to biomes far, far away,” she added.

For the nature obsessed, “Planet Earth III, created by BBC Earth, is appearing on screens next year, followed by the new DLC coming to both Minecraft Education and Minecraft Marketplace soon after! You’ll be able to play through some of our planet’s most extreme biomes, meet some of the show’s main characters, and delve deeper into the stories of Planet Earth III in the new DLC.”

With more updates, content, and collaborations on the cards in the coming weeks and months, it’s clear Mojang wants to cement Minecraft’s legacy as the best selling game of all time.
