Xiaomi switching to HyperOS for future phones

  • Xiaomi has announced that its new mobile operating system is called HyperOS.
  • The new iteration will replace MIUI on future smartphones, starting with the Xiaomi 14 series later this month.
  • Xiaomi says it has been developing HyperOS since 2017.

There is a significant change on the horizon for upcoming Xiaomi phones, with the company announcing that it has a new mobile operating system called HyperOS.

Up until now, the most commonly used OS on Xiaomi phones has been MIUI, but when the company unveils its new 14 series of devices, HyperOS will be the go to.

At the time of writing, it is unclear how the experience on the new iteration will differ from the previous one, but Xiaomi says it is a blend of Android and its own in-house Vela system. Along with smartphones, HyperOS is reportedly designed to power other Xiaomi devices too, with future smart home appliances and even electric vehicles making use of the OS.

As Engadget points out, this new approach is quite similar to what Huawei has been working on with HarmonyOS, although that operating system is limited to use in wearables for the moment.

Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun, also shared that the development of the new OS dates back to 2017. He went on to describe it as, “a unified, integrated system framework that supports the entire ecosystem of devices and applications,” in a post on Weibo.

As mentioned, the Xiaomi 14 series will be the first devices to feature the new OS, although Lei Jun did not mention when the lineup will officially be unveiled to the world. That said, reports suggest the new offerings could be showcased later this month.

The CEO was similarly tight-lipped when it came to the prospect of the new OS porting to, or running on older hardware, simply replying on social media that those interested should, “stay tuned.” It is therefore more than likely that the upcoming release of the Xiaomi 14 series will focus on the devices, as well as the software powering them.
