Job search on X goes live

  • X (formerly Twitter)has rolled out its job search tool to all web browser users.
  • The platform tested out the tool in beta in August, as it continues its push to be an everything app.
  • iOS and Android versions of the tool are expected soon, with it limited to web browser for now.

It is no secret that Elon Musk is obsessed with turning X (formerly Twitter) into an everything app. We’re already seeing the platform dabble in live video streaming, and now it has gone live with a job search tool.

X tested out this new offering in beta in August, but is now rolling out it out to users, starting on web browser only for now. iOS and Android versions are on the way, but it is limited to the web browser iteration for now.

We took a look at the portal, checking to see what kind of results it comes up with. For the most part, it looks like available positions are very much focused on the tech industry, and companies within that segment.

As Engadget also discovered, job search results are generated for many of the companies that Musk owns or is a part of, including SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, and his latest venture x.ai.

Musk has made it known that the job search portal that X has cooked up is intended to both compete with and be “cooler” than what is available on LinkedIn. Given that the Microsoft-owned platform is far more professionally focused and built for networking compared to X, it will be interesting to see whether Musk and co. can indeed build something capable of besting LinkedIn.

Right now, the offering that is currently rolling out looks a little bare bones, featuring only two search fields – keyword and location.

At the moment it is rather limited in terms of what it returns, with results for Johannesburg and Cape Town not yielding results compared to South Africa while using the same keyword. As such, it is clear that quite a bit more work is needed before this X offering can come close to competing with LinkedIn.

To that end, X is working on items like job cards that are more easily shareable on the platform.

It is still early days for job search on X, so we will need to see what the coming months offer.
