Underwhelming December PS Plus games cap off 2023

  • Sony has announced the “free” games for PlayStation Plus subscribers to close out 2023.
  • December will see indie title Sable, as well as LEGO 2K Drive, which received middling reviews.
  • Don’t tell me PowerWash Simulator is a ‘genre-defining title’, I won’t hear of it.

This year has been a good one for subscribers to PlayStation (PS) Plus. In the last six months, subscribers had a chance to download and keep Alan Wake Remastered, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War, Saints Row (2022), Weird West and Callisto Protocol, among a range of interesting and varied indie titles and other games.

To close out 2023, Sony has today announced the final “free” PS Plus games of the year, which will become available to download from 5th December, and we’re a little disappointed that PlayStation isn’t going out with a bigger bang.

This also means you have until 5th December to download November’s PS Plus titles, including Aliens Fireteam, or you won’t be able to add them to your library going forward.

We start December with LEGO 2K Drive, a title for which we wrote a comprehensive list of reasons why adult fans of LEGO should absolutely avoid the game. Younger fans might feel cheated by the game in its current state too.

LEGO 2K Drive sees you put together your own LEGO vehicles to race across a vast open-world arena. You can play alone or with up to five friends online. There are mini-games and side missions too. What there isn’t is flying vehicles, which seemed to us as a cut feature from the game, seeing as there is a “Sky Cup” to be won. There are also ruinous amounts of microtransactions.

Next up we have a game that took the world by storm during the harsher lockdown periods of the COVID-19 pandemic. PowerWash Simulator is the first first-person washer game. Here you take command of a guy with a pressure hose and you… Wash things of grime and muck and it generally scratches that switch your brain off and be satisfied itch.

We like our games with a bit more going on in our minds honestly, but we cannot deny the success the title has had.

As you wash more things, including the Mars Rover, you earn cash which you can spend on better hoses, nozzles, cleaning fluids and extensions to make you an ever better, more powerful washer. There is also a multiplayer element in which you can join another person in co-op to wash faster and earn more money.

Rounding up the final PS Plus games of 2023 is December’s indie game. The Moebius-fueled Sable, a game in which you explore a massive desert landscape on a speeder.

“Embark on a unique and unforgettable journey and guide Sable through her Gliding; a rite of passage that will take her across vast deserts and mesmerizing landscapes, capped by the remains of spaceships and ancient wonders,” described PlayStation of the game, from a studio so small it doesn’t have a Wikipedia page.

You go from speeding across the landscape to platforming and puzzling your way through caverns and temples while on this journey. “With its unique art style and original soundtrack by Japanese Breakfast, envelop yourself in Sable’s world and explore everything at your own pace. There is a lot in this world just waiting to be discovered,” the company adds.

At least December has one game that has captured our interest. Let’s hope January arrives with a bang.
