You’ll be able to make your own GPTs soon

  • OpenAI has announced the impending launch of GPTs, which is a new feature that allows customers to make unique versions of ChatGPT.
  • GPTs are for internal use only, and will be made available to purchase to ChatGPT Plus subscribers and enterprise customers.
  • Example versions are available to try out from today, with this feature officially rolling out later this month.

In early September, OpenAI confirmed that it would be holding its first developer-focused conference in the form of DevDay on 6th November. Said DevDay is currently underway, and one of the big announcements involves a new feature called GPTs.

As the name would suggest, GPTs are custom versions of the wildly popular ChatGPT generative AI platform that OpenAI made available to the world at the beginning of this year, with nearly every company in a myriad industries now obsessed with leveraging generative AI in some way.

GPTs will essentially give them the opportunity to do so, with OpenAI planning to roll the feature out soon, although no definitive date or timeframe has been mentioned at the time of writing.

“GPTs are a new way for anyone to create a tailored version of ChatGPT to be more helpful in their daily life, at specific tasks, at work, or at home—and then share that creation with others. For example, GPTs can help you learn the rules to any board game, help teach your kids math, or design stickers,” the company explained in a blog post.

“Anyone can easily build their own GPT—no coding is required. You can make them for yourself, just for your company’s internal use, or for everyone. Creating one is as easy as starting a conversation, giving it instructions and extra knowledge, and picking what it can do, like searching the web, making images or analyzing data,” it added.

This new offering is designed to be purchased by ChatGPT Plus subscribers and Enterprise customers for now, with the company also noting that the latter group can only deploy their custom versions of the generative AI platform within their organisation.

For subscribers, a GPT Store is on the way to make access to new creations to a wider community available.

“Later this month, we’re launching the GPT Store, featuring creations by verified builders. Once in the store, GPTs become searchable and may climb the leaderboards. We will also spotlight the most useful and delightful GPTs we come across in categories like productivity, education, and ‘just for fun’. In the coming months, you’ll also be able to earn money based on how many people are using your GPT,” OpenAI confirmed.

If you are a Plus subscriber or Enterprise customer, there are a handful of example GPTs that you’ll be able to access and test out here.
