Google pushes back release of Gemini generative AI model

  • Google is reportedly set to push back the release of its latest generative AI foundational model, Gemini, to 2024.
  • The company revealed that it was working on Gemini as a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4.
  • The delay is reportedly down to Gemini struggling with non-English language queries.

Nearly every big tech company, including Google, is vying for a piece of the generative AI pie. The tech giant had originally planned to release a new generative AI foundational model, in the form of Gemini before the year’s end, but a report from The Information (paywall) says that release has since been pushed back.

Gemini, which Google bills to be a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4, has been earmarked for a release before the year’s end, but now Google is said to be targeting January next year instead.

According to sources close to the matter, the reason for the delayed launch stems from struggles that Gemini has been having in terms of dealing with non-English language queries.

If true, it presents a significant stumbling block as Google is aiming to Gemini to be applied across several business environments, ultimately serving as the enterprise-focused evolution of Bard.

Detailing its development at Google I/O earlier this year, the company explained that this foundational model, “was created from the ground up to be multimodal, highly efficient at tool and API integrations and built to enable future innovations, like memory and planning. While still early, we’re already seeing impressive multimodal capabilities not seen in prior models.”

“Once fine-tuned and rigorously tested for safety, Gemini will be available at various sizes and capabilities, just like PaLM 2,” it added.

Whether Google is able to keep to its supposed new deadline remains to be seen, but it is not the only big tech company dealing with issues at the moment.

Following the will he/ won’t he of Sam Altman at OpenAI, the company has chosen to delay the launch of its GPT Store, which will sell specific generative AI solutions to customers when it arrives sometime next year.
