LEAKED: First looks at the Samsung Galaxy S24 & A55

  • The weekend saw leakers and tipsters reveal Samsung’s latest smartphones in the Galaxy S24 and A55 series.
  • According to a video of renders of the A55, the midranger will be quite similar to its predecessor, but will feature an improved Exynos chipset.
  • Meanwhile the S24 series will be visually less curved than the S23 series, with a major new feature apprently being generative AI for text translation and image editing.

Renders of Samsung’s latest upcoming smartphones have leaked online covering both the OEM’s flagship and its midrange lineups.

Among the best midrangers around, the Galaxy A5X series has impressed us again and again, and now we have a possible first look at the Galaxy A55 set to replace the A54 which launched earlier this year.

The renders for this device came from noted tipster OnLeaks, who has a track record for accuracy. The leaker teamed up with website MySmartPrice to drop the renders of the smartphone.

According to a video of the renders, the upcoming Galaxy A55s will look relatively the same as the Galaxy A54 5G. In fact there is little noticeable difference at first glance.

The camera array will still feature three snappers, slightly raised from the surface of the device with stainless bezzles. From looks alone the A55 might be a bit wider than its previous incarnation just from the position of the Samsung logo at the bottom of the device.

But this might also be the perspective of the renders, so take this with a grain of salt. Otherwise, we can still expect the SIM slot to be at the top of the device, with both the power button and volume controls on the right edge.

The left edge is desolate, with no buttons. The punch-hole selfie cam returns at the top of the device.

Previous rumours collated by Android Authority suggest that the new midranger might now be powered by Samsung’s latest Exynos 1480 chip, and will feature a 50MP main camera (on par with the latest iPhone devices and no change from the A54) and be capable of 25W charging.

Compared to its predecessor, the new and improved chipset (the A54 has an Exynos 1380) is welcome but we could also be looking at an unchanged main camera, and an HD+ screen which is also available in the A54.

Performance improvements may be the lure, but if the rumours and leaks hold true we might just be getting a slightly improved device with a new name slapped on it.

First looks at the latest flagship from Samsung – Galaxy S24

The other major leak over the weekend was of Samsung’s upcoming flagship in the Galaxy S24 series.

Supposed renders of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series from Windows Report.

Windows Report says it has managed to acquire “exclusive photos and specs” of the upcoming Galaxy S24. It will reportedly come in three different models just like its predecessor, the S24, S24 Plus and the top-of-the-range S24 Ultra.

In terms of visual differences, the S24 Ultra is seemingly the same size as the S23 before it. The S24 will also have a flatter screen, replacing the curved screen corners seen in previous years. We saw this already with the S23, as that device went for a flat, but the upcoming smartphone will as rectangular as they come.

Apparently, the actual device will be shown off early next year during a Galaxy Unpacked event to be held on 17th January. A big new feature coming to the Galaxy flagship is all around generative AI – because of course, it is.

Reportedly, the S24 series will be able to translate chat in apps like WhatsApp and Telegram in real-time, handy for talking to friends around the globe. This feature is expected to support over a dozen languages.

Generative AI will also be heading for the device in new software that will make it easier to edit photos.

Otherwise we’re looking at a similar specsheet, with a notable difference being the inclusion of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, the latest from the chipmaker, which we saw recently alongside the Xiaomi 14 series.

The S24 Ultra will also reportedly feature a 200MP wide, main camera, 12GB of RAM, a 5 000mAh cell, and a QHD+ screen with up to 120Hz refresh rate.

South Africa should see both the S24 series and the A55 series landing in local shores later next year.
