6 Tech internships to apply for in 2024

A new year means new opportunities, and while finding jobs in South Africa is still not an easy task, especially for young people, there are at least many different companies out there – both in the private and public spaces – that offer internships for certain students.

There is a fair amount of available internships for South Africans open right now, from multiple industries. You can find internships at banks like ABSA, companies like L’Oreal South Africa, and many more with differing learnership opportunities and training plans. However, where there is a distinct lack of skills in the country, is in the IT and tech space. So this is what we will be focusing on in this article.

Here are 6 internships in the tech industry to apply for in 2024:

Vodacom

There are paid internship opportunities from Vodacom South Africa for 2024. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract that provides real workplace experience at Vodacom, as well as additional training at the telecom firm.

For these internships, which will reopen applications in June 2024, Vodacom requires applicants to be 26 years and younger and you need to have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree qualification, or a three-year national diploma.

Interns will train and work in Vodacom, and will learn core business areas of the telecom, one of the largest in Africa. You will work towards developing “competencies in the digital tech environment.”

Samsung

Samsung South Africa has also opened a graduate internship programme for 2024. The company, a maker and seller of electronics – one of the largest on Earth – is looking for interns to challenge themselves in a fast-paced environment.

They are looking for recent graduates in finance, marketing, accounting, data science, computer engineering and computer science, among other, varied fields.

Interns will take part in on-the-job training, cross-functional learning, and complex projects and stretch assignments, all while having opportunities to network with people at Samsung and the South African tech industry.

Transnet

South Africa’s embattled rail and port authority is currently fighting to right its wrongs thanks to a R47 billion boost from government. The public firm is looking to fill key roles within Transnet Port Terminals, where interns will take part in a 12-month training programme.

Learners will train in specific areas at Transnet, learning the ins and outs of the workings of South Africa’s ports – a highly technical endeavour.

You can apply for this internship straight out of a Matric, but certificates in logistics, operations management or related will be seen as an advantage.

iStore

The official Apple reseller in South Africa, iStore, is looking for fresh graduates wanting to head into the world of tech retail.

A “one of a kind” Elevate Programme from the company will work to fast-track the career of interns. You will learn leadership, managing high performing teams and more, all the while working with some of the world’s biggest brands.

Requirements include a completed Bachelor’s Degree, and an interest in technology. Applicants should also be willing to work flexible retail hours. You can find out more here.

Eskom

Another ailing government entity is looking for working interns. Eskom is hiring graduates for 2024, with a particular focus on engineering, computer science, IT, as well as marketing, finance and other degrees.

There are a whole bunch of internships available right now from the company for 2024, including positions in power distribution, human resources, finance and customer services, across most provinces.

MTN SA

Another major African telecom group is looking for interns for 2024. MTN is the largest telecom firm in Africa by sheer revenue share and its South Africa branch continues to be one of the most sought after companies to work for.

This programme includes coaching, mentorship and on-the-job experience. Once complete, interns will be placed in aligned roles in MTN SA if they are deemed suitable.

You will require a Bachelor’s Degree, must be less than 27 years old, and must have an average of 65 percent for your grade. You can find out more about this opportunity here.
