• Huawei has unveiled its latest Smart PV solution for South African residential customers in the form of the Luna 2.0.
• Along with being easier to install and operate compared to its first iteration, Huawei is selling the Luna 2.0 with a 10-year replacement warranty.
• The Luna 2.0 has specifically been designed with fire safety features in mind, which is always a concern with any large-format battery technology.

In recent years Huawei has been pushing its smart photovoltaic (PV) technology for South African enterprises and homes alike. At an event held in Sandton, the residential side of the business was the primary focus as the company unveiled the Fusionsolar Residential Luna 2.0 Smart PV solution.

Last year saw Huawei debut its FusionSolar offerings, and highlight partnerships with South African distributors and residential electricity specialists.

Now a new iteration of the Luna residential system is readying for the SA market, as Huawei prioritises energy storage for the home.

Here Zhao Tianqi (pictured above), VP of of Huawei Digital Power South Africa, noted that the company is focusing on three areas in particular moving forward – carbon neutrality, energy sovereignty, and commercial value.

“Huawei is the main player to combine electricity technology and digital technology to enable renewable energy,. And nowadays, solar energy is more and more important to renewable energy,” he emphasised.

Safety was also a key theme during the aforementioned event, with the Luna 2.0 also boasting a number of features designed with fire safety in mind.

“For residential products when installed in a household, safety is a matter of family, property, life, and also the reputation of your business. Any fire impact will bring damage to the household and also to your business’s reputation,” the VP stressed.

Some of the fire safety features onboard the Luna 2.0 include the ability to shut down the voltage to 0V in the event of an emergency, along with cell level monitoring, pack level protection, structural protection, and emergency protection. There is also a built-in intelligent fire suppression kit for each battery.

Talking through some of the other value-added elements of the Luna 2.0, Nick Lusson, VP of Huawei Digital Power East Africa, stated that it is a one-stop solar solution that is both reliable and easy to install, as well as featuring a 10-year replacement warranty.

No official pricing was revealed for the new Fusionsolar solution, but Huawei says it will be available to dealers, trade partners, and installers from March 2024 in South Africa.
