JOSHCO moves leasing applications to secure app

  • The Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) has announced it is moving its application process to an app.
  • The app complies with POPIA and will help in JOSHCO’s mission to eliminate corruption.
  • The JOSHCO app is available for free on Android and iOS.

As part of its goal to tackle inefficiency, fraud and corruption, the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) has moved its paper-based application to an app.

The company manages 8 825 social and affordable rental housing units within the City of Johannesburg municipality. These rental housing units cater to households with incomes that range between R1 850 to R22 000 per month with a specific view to providing housing to citizens at lower income levels.

By transitioning its application process to an app, JOSHCO hopes to not only help eliminate corruption but also expedite the application process for citizens in need of housing. As JOSHCO will be handling sensitive information, it says that has added additional layers of security and reliability to the app. In addition, JOSHCO promises that data processed through the app is managed securely.

“JOSHCO is unwavering in its commitment to maintaining data integrity and fortifying defences against potential exploitation by scammers. The digital transition aligns with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013, safeguarding applicants’ personal information from scams perpetrated by individuals posing as JOSHCO agents,” spokesperson for JOSHCO, Esethu Njenjani said in a media statement.

“As JOSHCO strides boldly into the digital era, we’re sending a clear message that efficiency and security are paramount,” Njenjani adds.

The JOSHCO app is available for both Android devices as well as Apple iPhones and iPads. The app is free to download on both operating systems.

Unfortunately, in response to a citizen on X, formerly Twitter, JOSHCO said that it currently doesn’t have any rental units available. Still, it’s worth downloading the app and keeping an eye out for affordable rentals as they are likely to be snatched up as quickly as they become available.
