• Samsung has launched the Galaxy A05 and A05s smartphones in South Africa.
• Both devices are available now and retail for R2 999 and R2 499, respectively.
• The smartphones provide solid battery life for their price, but give way in the performance and display categories.

Few companies can tout the catalogue of smartphones that tech giant Samsung has under its belt. From performance-intensive flagships like its S-range and foldables, to less expensive but still respectable machines like the A54. The company announced today that the latest models in its A-series of affordable smartphones have now launched in South Africa. These are the Samsung Galaxy A05 and A05s.

Samsung’s local representatives describe that the smartphones offer “great features at excellent prices.”

“These latest Galaxy A series models combine cutting-edge technology with affordability, ensuring that users can enjoy premium features without breaking the bank,” shared Kgomotso Mosiane, head of Marketing for Mobile eXperiences at Samsung.

Let’s see if that description is accurate:

Specifications – Samsung Galaxy A05

The specifications of the devices are clearly in the “entry level” category, with an LCD screen and middling RAM and storage space. However, the inclusion of a 5 000mAh cell and a 50MP camera array are bonuses often found in more expensive devices.

Otherwise nothing too mindblowing in terms of silicon or display.

Memory configurations on the Galaxy A05 and A05s are similar to the like of the POCO C40, however, these Galaxy devices are even cheaper as the POCO device retails for R3 199.

The Samsung Galaxy A05 will retail for R2 499 from Samsung stores and other retailers nationwide, while the A05s goes for R2 999.

As for the difference in specifications alongside the price increase the A05s comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 4G chip instead of the Mediatek chip in the A05. The GPU in the A05s is an Adreno 610. For the rear camera array, the A05s features an additional 2MP macro lens and a better selfie cam coming in at 12 MPs.

Both models are now available locally, as they launched in South Africa on 8th January 2023. It is available locally in black and lime green colourways.
