Spotify miniplayer for desktop on its way

  • Spotify is finally rolling out a highly requested feature as a miniplayer for desktop has been developed.
  • It will take the form of a resizeable floating window on a user’s desktop PC or laptop.
  • You’ll be able to control music, volume, select playlists, with Premium subscribers being the first to receive it.

Spotify is a music streaming platform that is always in flux, with new features being added or removed constantly. While some features are less well received than others, this latest one should go down a treat as it has been highly requested by users for some time now – a Spotify miniplayer for desktop.

This new feature is set to roll out in the coming weeks and months to Premium subscribers first, after which it will eventually make its way to the free version of the desktop application.

At the time of writing we have not spotted it on our desktop app (macOS), but when it does become available, users will notice it by a new icon appearing in the lower right corner of the application window, where the music controls are.

When you click on this new icon, the Spotify Desktop Miniplayer will launch as a resizable floating window that you’ll be able to interact with, providing access to controls for play/pause, skip, rewind, volume, and selecting playlists.

As seen in the header image above, there will be a few different options in terms of UI, with a slim and simple bar with just the basic controls, and two different square flavours – one only featuring album artwork and the other with music videos, should such a feature be optimised for the song in question.

Whether the Spotify MiniPlayer proves popular once it begins rolling out remains to be seen, but as Engadget has pointed out, this is a feature that has been requested by users since back in 2019 already, according to a community forum post which received more than votes.

It has since received a reply from Spotify’s admin noting that, “We’re happy to let you all know that this feature has now been Implemented.”
