Western Cape opens 2025 Masakh’iSizwe Bursary programme applications

  • The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure has opened applications for its Masakh’iSizwe Bursary programme.
  • The bursary is intended for those looking to study in the field of transport, engineering or infrastructure.
  • Applications are open right now until 31st August.

Looking to study toward a degree or diploma in transport, engineering or infrastructure in 2025 and beyond? Then take note of the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure’s Masakh’iSizwe Bursary programme.

The programme covers the studies of full-time students in a bid to address the skills shortage in the infrastructure sector. Students will need to study full-time and they will need to pursue their studies at an institution in the Western Cape.

Between the 2019 and 2024 academic years, 865 students have received bursaries through the programme. During that period, 185 students graduated, 135 have been employed and 15 graduates are in the process of being placed.

Students are selected for the programme based on a range of factors but applicants should be South African citizens, studying toward a qualification related to the work done by the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure. As mentioned, applicants must also be able to study at an institution in the province.

Study in the following fields qualify for the Masakh’iSizwe Bursary:

  • Property studies,
  • Geomatics,
  • Transport economics,
  • Transportation engineering,
  • Mechatronics,
  • Electrical and/or electronic engineering,
  • Civil engineering,
  • Construction management,
  • Mechanical engineering,
  • Quantity surveying,
  • Town/City and regional planning, and
  • Architecture.

The department says that bursaries will cover the study duration based on the minimum completion time outlined by a specific institution. The bursar’s academic performance, conduct and behaviour will be reviewed at the end of each year so those lucky enough to receive it should work hard to keep it.

Applications opened on Monday and will close on 31st August 2024. More information about the bursary programme as well as the application portal can be found at this link.
