West Africa is hungry for data centres and this firm is expanding

  • Pan-African data centre firm PAIX has upgraded the capacity of its Accra, Ghana data centre campus.
  • It has added 1.2MW of capacity to the centre in an effort to meet the ballooning demand for local data consumption.
  • The company says it is working to build new facilities in other African nations.

Nations across Africa are quickly seeing their hyperscale capabilities surge, and while South Africa is still leading the market, other African regions are rushing to catch up. In Ghana, West Africa, PAIX Data Centres has announced today a major expansion to its Accra facility.

This expansion will see the campus in the Ghanaian capital city be upgraded by 1.2MW of capacity, in an effort to meet the demand for local digital infrastructure and data consumption that PAIX says is rapidly outsripping the supply.

“The data centre, now one of the largest in Ghana, will help internet service providers (ISPs), cloud providers, and enterprises take full advantage of robust digital infrastructure and improved connectivity, to create online businesses such as e-commerce that will thrive in the digital era,” shares PAIX Data Centres in a press release sent to Hypertext.

PAIX is a pan-African data centre firm, with offices in Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya and now in Ghana. The company says that demand for reliable and scalable data centres in Africa is expected to exceed the current supply by 300 percent over the next two years.

“The current installed capacity of 250 MW will need to be significantly increased to 1 200 MW by 2030 to meet the rapidly increasing demand for data, with consumption expected to rise by 40% each year until 2025, according to industry estimates,” PAIX explains.

The upgraded facility, pictured in the cover image above, boasts modern infrastructure and robust security measures. The data center also features advanced cooling and waste management systems, PAIX adds, and the increased integration of renewable energy as a power source, to improve environmental impact.

PAIX chose Accra, Ghana for its proximity to regional and international network routes and subsea cables, allowing the company to offer lower latency services.

“PAIX’s investment in our ACC-1 data centre positions it as the leading network hub that is created by the aggregation of multiple undersea cable landing points connecting to terrestrial cables, and this makes Accra a highly attractive gateway to West Africa,” enthused Wouter van Hulten PAIX Data Centres CEO.

“We are working closely with our connectivity, CDN, social media, and cloud customers seeking to serve this emerging market. We are developing thriving magnetic cloud and content hubs in Accra.”

The company first established the data centre campus in 2018 in Accra – its first data centre. Soon after it built its second facility in Kenya in 2020.

It says further locations are under development.
