You can be the proud owner of a (LEGO) Lambo Countach for R3399

  • The Lamborghini Countach is LEGO’s latest larger scale display car.
  • Pricing overseas is $179.99, €179.99 or £159.99.
  • South Africans will pay R3 399 when it launches on 4th July.

Last week LEGO made the news with its latest set in the form of 10337: Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole, a huge 1 506 piece recreation of the famous Lambo and motoring icon. At the time we didn’t know the pricing and availability of the set in South Africa, but that has changed.

Great Yellow Brick, the online platform of the physical LEGO Certified Stores in the country, now have a coming soon page for the set which you can view here. It reveals that the set will cost R3 399 and it will be released on 4th July.

So how does this compare to overseas? Starting with the pricing and the Countach has a RRP of $179.99, €179.99 or £159.99 depending on the region. South African pricing is usually based on the Euro RRP and, at the time of writing, €179.99 converts to around R3 405. This makes the R3 399 price almost identical to what is being charged in the EU, save a single R5 coin.

The release date is also slightly different. The Countach will release elsewhere right on 1st July but South Africa will need to wait a few days for 4th July.

For those willing to pay the price and wait until 4th July, what are you getting once you open the box?

“This LEGO car model comes with an array of authentic features, including a detailed cockpit, working steering, opening scissor doors, trunk and rear hood, plus a detailed V12 engine. Deep-dish rims, large taillights and a sleek rear spoiler add to the authenticity, resulting in a captivating display piece for any home or workplace,” reads the official description.

Rather interesting is the “deep-dish” rims mentioned in that description. If you take a close look at the images in the gallery above, you will notice that this Countach actually has six wheels. To mimic the super-wide back wheels of the Countach, LEGO has chosen to simply combine two different wheels together to create that impression.

The topic of wheel sizes has been hotly debated in the LEGO fandom of late, especially because of the F1 sets of Ayrton Senna’s McLaren and the latest Mercedes-AMG car. Both of these, in real life, have noticeably larger wheels at the back, a fact that was not replicated in LEGO.

As for the dimensions of the final product, this version is 34 centimetres long, 16 centimetres wide and nine centimetres tall. This puts it roughly in scale with the rest of the cars that LEGO has released in its Icons theme, which used to be called Creator Expert. You can see it with some of these other cars in the image below.

Notable in that image is the red Corvette which we turned pink for Barnie, the Land Rover Defender that we reviewed last year and the Porsche 911 which you can actually turn into a Countach thanks to the creativity of the LEGO community.

Pictures are one thing but we’re really eager to see the official Countach in person and how it looks on a shelf compared to the other offerings.
