- India leads the world in the adoption of ChatGPT.
- A new report claims that 45 percent of people in India surveyed responded that they use ChatGPT.
- 92 percent of companies in India have already incorporated ChatGPT in their daily operations.
Since launching to the public in November 2022, ChatGPT reached levels of popularity reserved for some of the world’s biggest social media sites and did so in record time. There are still over 180 million people that use ChatGPT every month, and there are people in one particular country that travel to the ChatGPT website more than anywhere else in the world.
That country, according to a report from Stockylitics citing VisualCapitalist, is India which is currently leading the world in ChatGPT adoption with 45 percent of surveyed individuals saying that they use the platform.

It may surprised people that developing countries are the widest adopters of ChatGPT, while countries like the US, Australia, and the UK are averaging around 20 percent of those surveyed. South Africa’s own ChatGPT usage is quite high with a 31 percent of surveyed participants indicating that they use the platform.
India, however, is the distinct leader, with the second closest being Morocco with only 38 percent of surveyed participants saying they use the app. Followed by the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Brazil, and Indonesia.
One similar trait that is features in the top several nations on the list is that they feature a growing population of young people, perhaps indicating that the chatbot is more relevant for younger tech-minded individuals.
An interesting highlight found by the research is the purposes of chatbot usage. It seems developing countries have found actual benefits of the technology, while developed countries use it for fun.
“India and the Philippines have been using chatbots for targeted purposes such as research or as virtual personal assistants. In contrast, a significant portion of ChatGPT users in the US and Germany primarily engage with the chatbot for entertainment or out of curiosity, often just ‘playing around with it’,” Stockylitics writes in the report.
The report adds that over 42 percent of India’s office workers were actively using ChatGPT in March 2024, more than double the amount that embraced the AI last year.
“The rapid increase in ChatGPT usage signifies a paradigm shift towards a more innovative and efficient working environment,” commented Artis Rozentals, CEO of DeskTime, a work-from-home tracking software business.
DeskTime conducted a study on 14 818 employees across the nation and found that usage of ChatGPT gre significantly between January and April this year and has remained steady since.
“This study highlights the innovative spirit of Indian employees. It sets a benchmark for global workplaces on effectively integrating generative AI into daily operations to complement human skills and enhance overall performance.”
The Stockylitics report also indicates that 96 percent of Indian companies are already in the process of considering using OpenAI’s chatbot to make workplaces more productive. Over 92 percent of Indian offices have already incorporated ChatGPT into their daily operations, the report claims.
