Brickfair 2024: Don’t miss South Africa’s biggest LEGO event this month

At the end of October, LEGO fans in South African can attend the biggest showing of the plastic brick as the annual Brickfair event happens again.

Taking place on 26th and 27th October at the Menlyn Shopping Centre in Pretoria, Brickfair is a collection of the best LEGO builders from across the country who gather to show off what they have been building. Brickfair is a cross between an art gallery and a street fair where you can spend hours soaking in the amazing creations that individuals – and groups participating as LUGs – have managed to come up with.

If you need an idea of what to expect see our gallery of a smaller show which take place earlier this year. Brickfair 2024 promises to be much larger and offer more for visitors.

Attendance at Brickfair 2024 is entirely free though the website for the event does remind attendees that they will need to pay any parking fees that the Menlyn Shopping Centre demands. The website also reminds visitors that, by being surrounded by so much LEGO, you may be enticed to buy some of your own.

Great Yellow Brick, the operator of the physical LEGO Certified Stores in South Africa, is a Premier Partner of the event and a likely place where attendees will want to pick up some LEGO if they’re so inclined. No mention has been made by Great Yellow Brick just yet about any sales or special offers that will be happening during Brickfair 2024 just yet.

For the 2023 incarnation of the event, Great Yellow Brick offered double loyalty points on all purchases made inside of the physical store inside of Menlyn. The store also offered games that attendees could play, giveaways and prizes. We have to imagine that similar offerings will accompany this version of the event, but that hasn’t been confirmed just yet.

For those exhibiting there will also be a range of categories to be judged under with nine categories of competition you can see below.

It’s always fun to see what is made under which category, especially those for the kid’s display and rookie of the year. These categories encourage newcomers, especially the young ones, to bring their creations and compete on the merits of their construction.

  • Best in show: These prizes are awarded to the overall best builds of the weekend. Let your imagination run wild!,
  • Rookie of the year: If this is your first time exhibiting at Brickfair, this category is for you. Come on noobs, let’s see what you can do,
  • Best Technic or mechanical model: Whether it’s a GBC module or construction equipment, if your build moves, this is the category for you to enter,
  • Best SuperHero display: Marvel, DC or your own Superhero design,
  • Best Castle or Fantasy display: Give King Arthur and James Cameron a run for their money,
  • Best City or Town build: In a town, far far away, show the crowd how hard minifigures work,
  • Best Space or SciFi display: Let see your futuristic builds. Whether it is existing or your own imagined universe, let see how you live long and prosper,
  • Best kid’s display: An open category for our younger exhibitors, open only to exhibitors 18 years and younger. Sorry boomer!,
  • Best presentation of a set(s): If building MOCs (My Own Creations) is not your thing, we’re giving a prize to the exhibitor which displayed a standard set (or collection of sets) in a unique and interesting way.
