God of War series gets a shake up at Amazon

  • The Amazon God of War series has lost its showrunner and two executive producers.
  • Amazon will now be shopping for a new showrunner as well as a new writer’s room.
  • The show will still reportedly follow the beats laid out in the 2018 reboot of the franchise created by Santa Monica Studios.

Amazon’s adaptation of the God of War games into a series isn’t going too well but it’s also not lost at sea.

As reported by Variety the series showrunner and executive producer Rafe Judkins as well as executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have left the project. Their departure comes as Amazon reportedly wants to take a different creative direction with the show. As such, the company is looking to hire a new showrunner and a raft of new writers.

The trio who have now left reportedly had multiple scripts on hand but it’s unclear whether any of this material will be used.

This is sure to lead to delays with the release of the show which was originally ordered two years ago, around the same time we got out first look at Fallout. With this in mind, we suspect that it could two more years before we get a taste of Kratos.

So what direction does Amazon want to take with the show?

From reports it looks like the show will emulate the 2018 reboot of the franchise where Kratos is in Midgard with his son Atreus following the death of his wife. While Amazon used Fallout to tell its own story with a bit of fan service thrown in, we suspect God of War will be more like HBO’s The Last of Us in that the show will follow the beats of the game.

The show is being produced as a joint project between Amazon Studios and Sony Picture Television.

The God of War show won’t be the only time we see Kratos on screen. The blood-fuelled god will feature in Secret Level, an anthology series that features several game properties including The Outer Worlds, Warhammer 40K, New World (it is an Amazon series after all) and Concord (RIP).

Variety reports that Santa Monica Studio’s studio creative director Cory Barlog remains onboard as an executive producer, as do Playstation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Santa Monica Studio’s Yumi Yang and Vertigo’s Roy Lee.
