The tech stories that shaped 2024

2024 is nearing an end, and while businesses close up shop for the year and families prepare to enjoy the holidays with one another, it is a good time to reflect upon the top tech stories of the past 12 months before the franticness kicks off once again with CES 2025 in Las Vegas in January.

For our list of top 2024 tech stories, we have looked at the news and events that have sparked the interest of the Hypertext editorial team in particular, breaking them down to one leading story per month.

As such, below follows 12 tech stories that shaped the year – some for the good, and some for the not so good.

When it comes to the latter, Donald Trump winning his second term in office in November brings great uncertainty for the technology world, and we have already seen how companies out of China are the first in the firing line.

The CrowdStrike incident in August which crippled several areas of the internet for days was also another blotch, highlighting just how easily some of the biggest companies in the world can be rendered useless by a single line of code.

Other notable tech stories this year include on-device AI, which was kicked off by Samsung on the Galaxy S24 series, and was quickly followed by the likes of Copilot+ for PCs and laptops. We also need to highlight the “end” to loadshedding in South Africa this year, and while the general outlook is positive, we are not out of the woods yet.

With 2024 being a tough one for South Africans, especially when it comes to the rising cost of living, here’s hoping 2025 will offer some form of reprieve.
