The Oscar nominations for 2025 are here, and they are a historic list with actress Karla Sofía Gascón becoming the first trans woman nominated for Best Actress in a movie that we’re sure won’t rile up social media.
Especially if they win.
They star in Emilia Perez, which has also been nominated for best picture, alongside Dune: Part Two, The Brutalist, The Substance, and Wicked.
It is the latest PR stunt to get the Academy Awards to move the needle again in some way, shape, or form. Every year the awards ceremony seems to have a big viral moment that makes international news like the Will Smith slap and the Moonlight Best Picture mistake and yet viewership continues to circle the drain.
We think that by the end of the event this year, everyone will be upset especially as there are calls to cancel or at least postpone the Oscars because of the destructive wildfires still running rampant through Los Angeles in which 28 people have lost their lives.
Indeed no-one wants to luxuriate in red carpets, expensive clothes and enormously rich people when their entire lives have burned down around them. But the show must go on or at least that is what the organisers will say.
The biggest winners in terms of Oscar nods is quasi-musical Emilia Perez, which saw 13 nominations and is the standout from the pack this year, including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and more.
Another notable nominee is Dune: Part Two, a rare science fiction film that sees a Best Picture nomination, though not as rare as it once was thanks to Everything Everywhere All At Once winning Best Picture in 2022.
2025 is clearly the year of the musical as Disney’s Wicked is the runner-up in terms of nominations with 10, including Best Picture, Best Actress and a Supporting Actress nod for Ariana Grande. Adrien Brody’s The Brutalist is sharing the 10 nomination score, while veteran Demi Moore has received her first career nomination for The Substance.
Timothée Chalamet is seeing his second Best Actor nomination, but not for Dune and instead for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. He will duke it out against the Winter Soldier, Sebastian Stan, who played Donald Trump in The Apprentice.
