A simple guide to get your brand new Samsung Galaxy S9 set up

So you’ve taken the plunge and got your hands on the latest flagship smartphone in Samsung’s Galaxy lineup the S9.

As you might already be aware the Galaxy S9 is loaded with the latest technology including the latest Snapdragon 845 chipset and a 16MP camera at the back that takes incredible photos whether you’re enjoying a picnic with your friends or dancing the night away at your favourite club.

But before you get started making your own emoji with AR Emoji you need to get the handset set up.

Power on

When you power your new device on you will be prompted to connect to a Wifi network. This is highly recommended as there may be updates that need to be downloaded and these updates can eat away at your mobile data plan without you realising it.

Once you’ve been securely connected to a Wifi hotspot you will be able to restore a previous backup that has been stored from Google Drive. This is incredibly useful if you still have your old Android smartphone and want to use the same apps as you were before upgrading. You can also restore media such as photos at this point. If you’d prefer to start fresh you can do that as well.

At initial setup you will also be prompted to log into your Google as this will make setting up email, the Play Store and other Google apps easier.

Security

The Samsung Galaxy S9 offers you a bevy of options to both secure and unlock your handset. You can choose from the regular options; PIN, pattern, password or the simple swipe to unlock.

In addition you can also set up biometric authentication in the form of a fingerprint or with your face by way of Intelligent Scan. Samsung’s Intelligent Scan combines face and iris scanning to improve the efficacy of unlocking your phone. This means that no matter what lighting conditions you are using the handset under (provided there is at least some light) you can unlock your Galaxy S9 with a simple glance at the display, even if it’s sitting on your desk.

All of these security measures can be set up during the initial set up but you can also change them at any time in the settings menu.

See notifications without wasting battery

Once you’ve set up your phone you can start customising it to make it your very own.

The Always On screen that was popularised by the Samsung Galaxy S7 returns in the Galaxy S9 and this time it features a number of improvements.

You are able to set the brightness of the display but we recommend opting for auto-brightness so that the display will adapt to ambient lighting conditions. There’s nothing worse than trying to sleep at night with your phone acting like a lighthouse for ships passing in the night. If you prefer one brightness however you can set a schedule that will turn the “Always On” display off during certain hours.

You can also select which widgets you want to see on the “Always On” display or opt to remove widgets altogether for a sleeker look that also saves battery.

Living with an edge

As gorgeous as Samsung’s Infinity display is, it’s also incredibly functional. A quick swipe from the outer edge inwards launches a widget that gives you access to your most frequent apps.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 is designed to make managing your life more simple. Just swipe to quickly access Google Chrome or Messages, search for directions to a meeting or remind a loved one about an important appointment.

The Infinity Edge is also hiding some new, flashy functionality. Flip your phone on its face and Edge Lighting will alert you to new messages and calls by lighting up the edge of the display. You can colour code up to five contacts so you know when you’re getting a call you actually want to answer.

Now you’re set up and ready to start enjoying your brand new Samsung Galaxy S9. Enoy!
