Earlier in the week we saw some relatively low new daily infection rates for COVID-19 in South Africa, but the latest statistics revealed by the National Department of Health (NDoH) have seen the infections rise to the levels we’ve reported on in recent weeks.
To that end the NDoH says that 1 990 new infections have been recorded, bringing the total for the country to date to 642 431.
As such it looks like our hopes that the number of new infections would be slowing down to triple digits each day are gone.
Whether this will impact talks of the country heading to lockdown level 1 remains to be seen, but either way, it appears as if South Africa still has some work to do in order to curb the infection rate.
Looking at the other statistics provided by the NDoH following the past 24 hours, 82 new fatalities have been recorded, with the total now sitting at 15 168.
Still the number of recoveries remain relatively high, with 569 935 to date. This translates to a recovery rate of 88.72 percent. It has been sitting in the high 80s for a number of days now, so hopefully the coming days will see the rate climb into the 90 percent range.
