Latest PS5 Pro leak suggests console will push graphics to the limit

  • A new leak suggests that the PS5 Pro will feature the most advanced ray tracing engine available.
  • The “Double Ray Tracing Intersect Engine” will bring even more realistic graphics to the console, putting it on par with top-of-the-range gaming PCs if true.
  • The engine is thanks to AMD’s RDNA 4 GPU technology which will launch around the same time as the rumoured PS5 Pro launch.

We know now that the PlayStation (PS) 5 Pro console is a real thing that Sony is planning on releasing, and we also know that the company is looking at the end of 2024 for the launch window for the updated console.

Previous rumours and leaks created a picture that the PS5 Pro would likely be the most hardware advanced console on the market, with support for 8K resolution, the ability to render graphics 45 percent faster than the base PS5 and an AI accelerator to squeeze out even more frames from your favourite titles.

A brand new leak from X user @Kepler_L2 details even more information that continues to drive the idea that the PS5 Pro will have comparable hardware to the finest gaming PCs, those at the very top of the range.

The leak has been widely reported on, with the biggest piece of information being that the PS5 Pro will feature the enhanced ray tracing engine in AMD’s RDNA 4 GPU architecture.

Currently, AMD is offering RDNA 3, which means that Sony’s upcoming console will have – if the leak holds true – the latest in ray tracing technology from a company not named NVIDIA, what is known as the Double Ray Tracing Intersect Engine.

This would make scenes with ray tracing look even more like real-world visuals, especially in games that make heavy use of the graphical feature like Cyberpunk 2077. The upcoming console and the upcoming AMD Radeon RX 8000 graphics cards are set to feature similar GPU architecture to allow this advanced ray tracing.

But often we get excited from numbers changing from “3” to “4” so until we can see some benchmarks with RDNA 4 hardware, who can really say what the difference will be? Especially noting NVIDIA’s edge in the ray tracing department compared to AMD in recent years.

New information from Insider Gaming points out that the PS5 Pro will be announced around September this year, even though Sony has yet to officially acknowledge that the console is in production, with the release date set for the end of the year – Holiday season – or early next year, which is when the RDNA 4 containing new Radeon cards from AMD are set to be released.

The console will likely be super expensive if all these hardware rumours hold water.
