Getty Museum offers the world free art online

For most people the idea of seeing famous paintings and other art mostly involves a trip to a museum. Now, that’s about to change, with the Getty Museum announcing that it will make 4 600 pieces of art available for free, online, through its Open Content Program.

Users will be able to use the Getty Search Gateway to see works by Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Rembrandt, and others. Getty also has plans to extend the existing collection by adding more art into the public domain, as well as adding content from the Getty Research Institute’s special collection.

Score one for the internet, helping make the previously inaccessible far more available to people across the world.
