New Deux Ex announced alongside Eidos-Montréal’s new game engine

This marvellous image gives viewers a teeny tiny hint at what the next Deus Ex game could look like. It was released alongside an announcement by Eidos-Montréal of its new engine that will be “the cornerstone for all Deus Ex Universe projects at Eidos-Montréal”.

It may be all brown and yellow, but Eidos says you mustn’t read anything into that.

Called the Dawn Engine, it’s actually a heavily-modified version of the one used to make Hitman: Absolution (IO Interactive’s Glacier 2 engine for those who don’t know), so it’s not brand-spanking-new. But Eidos is clearly very proud of it.

“We wanted to share a first glimpse of what we aim to achieve, with a screenshot taken directly from the Dawn Engine,” community manager Sacha Ramtohul posted to the Eidos Montreal community blog. “Keep in mind – despite any hints you may pick up from this image, this screenshot was only taken in order to display the level of detail and artistic fidelity that is possible with the Dawn Engine.” So maybe the next game won’t be all brown-and-yellow, then.

That all sounds pretty good to me. 2012’s Hitman: Absolution was gorgeous to look at and so much fun to play (naysayers be damned, I thought it was excellent), and 2011’s Deus Ex: Human revolution was a welcome return to form for Deus Ex’s open-ended gameplay, so I am pretty excited to see what the lessons learned from both games – as well as the new graphical hotness – will yield in this new one.
