Good news, Xbox One owners and lovers of the hunt: the beta test for “asymmetric shooter” Evolve is now live, and you can grab it right this very second and play like mad – and for free – until the 19th of Jan. Sound good? Simply navigate to the game’s store page on the Xbox Live marketplace, and get the download going.

But there’s a couple of catches: it’s an Xbox One exclusive, and you must have a current Xbox Live Gold membership. That makes sense, since it is a multiplayer game and all, but it’s still something to be aware of. If you were hoping to play on your own, against AI-controlled bots just to test the game out (something that will be entirely possible in the full game), you’re out of luck.

Then on the 17th of January, the developers will unleash the “Evacuation dynamic campaign”, which combines all maps and modes “for an ever-changing game experience”, whatever that means.

Perhaps the best news about the beta is that all of your character progression will transfer over to the full game when it comes out on the 10th of February, provided you use the same Gamertag when playing.

Deon du Plessis

Deon got his first taste of PC gaming at the tender age of 11 when his father bought an 8088 XT, ostensibly to "help him with his homework". Instead, it introduced him to Leisure Suit Larry, King Graham, Sonny Bonds and many more, and Deon has been a PC gamer and hardware enthusiast ever since. He landed his first professional writing gig in 2006 at a prestigious local PC magazine, a very happy happenstance as he got to write for a living about things he loves - tech, PCs, gaming, and everything in between. He's been writing about it all ever since, and loves every minute of it.
