Borderlands developer is ‘actively looking’ at Razer’s virtual reality technology

Gearbox Software, the studio behind the popular Borderlands games is apparently pretty interested Razer’s open source virtual reality headset technology (OSVR) that I wrote about earlier this week.

In case you missed it, OSVR (or open source virtual reality) currently consists of a ‘hackable’ headset and a set of open source tools and resources that make developing for the budding technology a little more streamlined.

Gearbox was announced as one of the early supporters of the tech, but a bit more clarity came at CES recently when VRfocus.com spoke to Razer’s product marketing manager Chris Mitchell about it. Mitchell said that “[Gearbox] are actively looking at OSVR,” and that “They’ve evaluated the technologies and what they’re going to be doing with it you’ll see once they announce.”

So no truly exciting news, then, but at least a hint that a high-profile studio is considering some sort of virtual reality project. Perhaps more importantly, it seems to say that making virtual reality development as accessible and transparent as possible through open source is drawing the attention of some big names.

Gearbox’s most recent game is the well-received Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and they’re apparently hard at work on a new shooter called Battleborn for the two new consoles and PC. What sort of applications they will find for VR are anyone’s guess at this point, but at least they’re looking.
