Tomorrow’s system update brings suspend/resume to the PS4

Sony has just confirmed via a press statement that the PlayStation 4’s latest update, version 2.5, will roll out tomorrow.

The update, codenamed “Yukimura”, brings with it new suspend and resume functionality that will let people suspend their PlayStation 4 with a game open in the background, and then resume play right where they left off when the PlayStation 4 is woken up.

(It’s something I’ve noticed my Xbox One already does well and has done for months, so for a change Sony’s behind the curve on this one.)

Other changes on the cards include social enhancements like better integration with Facebook and fewer steps to setting up a party.

Sony is also improving various accessibility options on the PlayStation 4; as of update 2.5 button assignments on the Dualshock 4 controller can be customised, gamers will be able to zoom into displayed pictures and invert colours on all system functions, apps and games. These should help gamers with impaired manual vision and limited manual dexterity to play.

The ones I’m happiest about, though, are the enhancements made to trophies, and how they are shared: in 2.5, whenever you earn a trophy the PS4 will automatically take a picture of the moment it unlocks, saving you from having to manually capture it, plus sharing those moments to Facebook and Twitter will be easier.

But that’s not all: once 2.5 is installed, gamers will have the option to allow future updates to install automatically. Remote Play, Sony’s streaming tech that lets you play PS4 games on a PlayStation Vita, is also getting tweaked with an update that allows games that run at 60fps on the PS4 to also run at 60fps on “supported devices”.

Update 2.5 rolls out tomorrow, so keep your PS4s in standby mode and they should grab the update while you’re at work or school.
