Surprise: Risk of Rain is on the Nintendo Switch now

If you were looking for something to play this long weekend the Nintendo Switch has a new addition that came out of nowhere in Risk of Rain.

Initially released on the PC back in 2013, Risk of Rain is an indie darling with many fans and a big name in the roguelike subgenre.

Last night the Twitter account for the series (a second game is in the works) announced the launch with a link to the storefront.

Developer Hopoo Games also released a trailer for the Switch version of the game, which is being hosted on the official Nintendo channel. You can watch it below.

The trailer shows off the core of the game with its familiar platforming and permadeath. There’s also online and couch co-op support, something you may want to look into given this game’s brutal difficulty.

Despite our love for roguelikes we just never got into Risk of Rain the way many people did. Don’t let that discourage you, however, especially given the relatively low price of the title. In the US you’ll be paying $9.99 (~R142), but the regional pricing in South Africa is R131.

The game has not appeared on nintendo.co.za yet, but will be available in the eShop on the Switch itself. We assume this may happen in other regions too, so you will need to power the console on if you want to poke around the local store page.

We hope that this news is a sign that we’ll be hearing more about Risk of Rain 2. After being announced in May of 2017 we got a teaser trailer in August this year. Releasing a game on the Switch is a great way to get some buzz around the series again.
