We’re used to seeing knockoff versions of popular products in media, but we didn’t expect to see a fake Reddit when playing Marvel’s Avengers.

In the first hour or so of the game Kamala Khan is browsing some kind of forum looking for clues that support her theory that AIM are the bad guys of the story.

If you’ve spent any amount of time on Reddit the layout of the fake site is immediately recognisable:

Things look even more familiar when Khan clicks on a thread entitled “THE CURE IS A LIE!!! Guess the password and expose the truth!”.

Here you can see many trappings of the real Reddit. Firstly the subreddit is denoted by “r/”. On the site “reddit.com” is followed by “/r/” and then the name of the subreddit.

Here it’s “/A.I.MSucksthread”, but this isn’t a subreddit name that would work as Reddit doesn’t allow fullstops in these names.

Thankfully a real /r/AIMSucksthread subreddit has been made already. At the time of writing it has just five members. Marvel’s Avengers will only get a general release on 4th September, with these early discoverers being those who pre-ordered certain versions of the game.

The in-game user name of the thread’s creator is /u/screaminginhuman, and that account does exist too. It as created just a day ago, so we suspect it’s another early player who just connected made the connection.

Finally, right at the top of the fake webpage, there’s also the subreddit name r/THE RESISTANCE. This breaks another subreddit name rules as you can’t have a space in there. /r/TheResistance and /r/The_Resistance do exist, however. The former is a political community against Donald Trump with 841 members, and the latter doesn’t seem to have any real point or theme with only six members.

Due to timezones we’re only a few hours into the game so we’re not sure if this fictional Reddit will appear again.
