CD Projekt Red installs ‘next-gen firewalls’ after cyber attack

Back in February CD Projekt Red revealed that it had been the victim of a cyber attack resulting in criminals making off with important data after the company refused to co-operate. Now, nearing the middle of June, an official update has been issued.

The announcement of this update highlights several key areas that the company has improved when it comes to its digital security, namely:

• “our core IT infrastructure has been redesigned and rolled out;
• new next-generation firewalls with advanced anti-malware protection have been implemented;
• a new remote-access solution has been employed;
• the number of privileged accounts, and access rights to accounts, has been limited;
• a new mechanism for the protection of endpoints, servers, and networks has been installed;
• our event-monitoring mechanisms have been improved;
• we have expanded our internal security department;
• we have established cooperation with multiple external cybersecurity & IT specialists.”

As impressive as that list is it’s all very vague as the announcement doesn’t give many details about each of these items. That being said that’s probably smart as we’re sure playing cards close to the chest is the best option right now.

Those wondering why the company has chosen now to announce these things (these changes have almost certainly been happening gradually over the past few months) it’s likely because of the recent spate of public releases involving the stolen data.

Important data like source code for CD Projekt Red games has apparently been bought and sold illicitly since February but the public hasn’t seen much of it. What the public has seen, however, is reveals from this leak showing the shocking state of Cyberpunk 2077, even close to its release.

It appears that developers on the game made their own montage of bugs and problems experienced in the game. Remedy Entertainment actually did something similar for Quantum Break which it released to the public, but the difference here is that Quantum Break wasn’t a technical mess and unfinished train wreck at launch like Cyberpunk 2077.

These video leaks are popping up everywhere. You can see one of the uploaded to YouTube in the embed below.

CD Projekt Red is currently working with several law enforcement agencies right now including Interpol, Europol and the General Police Headquarters of Poland but if anyone will be caught or charged remains to be seen.
