Kerbal Space Program Enhanced Edition is coming to new consoles

Kerbal Space Program Enhanced Edition is an upgraded version of the game for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S that will be arriving later this year right before we get into 2022.

The announcement states that it will arrive in Fall of this year. For those of us in countries that don’t use Western seasons to mark the passing of time, the US fall is between late September and late December.

Like many cross-generational games this will be a free upgrade for owners on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. At launch, whenever that is “in the Fall”, owners will be upgraded for free if they own the hard to find PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Those who don’t already own the game can buy it for $39.99 overseas. Right now that US price converts to to R567.91

As for what this new generation port has one offer there’s no support for 4K – which many have come to expect – but rather 1440p. Odd resolution aside improved framerates are promised. The Xbox Series S, the lowest spec of the new consoles, will have to stick to 1080p, however, but improved FPS is still promised here.

These resolutions and framerates boosts will be accompanied by better textures and shaders.

“The additional system memory on these consoles results in a more stable game experience and allows for an increase of part count on player’s crafts and contraptions. This release benefits from upgraded shaders and textures allowing for more stunning overall visual impressions for players,” adds the announcement.

An odd bonus feature of this console port is mouse and keyboard support. We’re sure most people aren’t plugging in PC accessories to their consoles but it’s nice to know it’s there. We’ll never say no to a bonus feature that players aren’t forced to use.

While this announcement will be welcomed by many it also brings up the question for the planned sequel Kerbal Space Program 2 which is still in development.

The news of the Enhanced Edition on new consoles also brought with it an official statement that the sequel will come to this hardware too next year. More details are promised at a later stage for this.
