Bungie hits reload on Destiny 2’s weapons

On Thursday gamers eagerly awaited a new This Week at Bungie blog post so much so that just about everything related to Bungie and Destiny 2 was trending on Twitter at one point.

This week’s blog post covered a long awaited topic – weapon changes coming to Destiny 2 in Season 15 which launches next week Tuesday.

First and foremost, the quickswap glitch which has been used to great effect in both the Deep Stone Crypt and Vault of Glass Raids is being fixed. Does this mean folks will have to find another way to one phase certain Raid bosses? Probably but we’ll have to see how this plays out in the wild.

The most important change, however, is to Destiny 2’s ammo economy.

“Running out of Primary ammo has never been tactically interesting. Running out in hard PvE content or because you were on a tear in PvP was a weird and sometimes frustrating experience that we would like to not subject anyone to in the future,” writes weapons feature lead at Bungie, Chris Proctor.

With that in mind, all Primary ammo weapons will now have infinite ammo. Yes, this includes Fighting Lion. If you want a free tip, dust off the Crimson, Huckleberry, Fighting Lion and Sweet Business you have in your Vault as they might prove to be rather valuable moving forward.

There are also some rather extreme weapon changes coming in Season 15.

Breech grenade launchers, for example, are getting their blast radius and splash damage reduced. As regards PvE however, these weapons are getting a 12 percent damage boost. Unfortunately the Blight Pipe of Taken Might Witherhoard is unaffected by these changes.

Fusion cuisine

By far the biggest changes coming to Destiny 2 are as regards Fusion Rifles.

Despite having different archetypes, these weapons tend to feel very similar and have been in line for a buff for sometime now. When Season 15 hits, all Fusion rifles are getting a 15 percent damage increase in PvE content along with the following changes:

High Impact

  • Base charge time increased from 0.86s to 1.0s
  • Shots per burst reduced from seven to five
  • Reduced total damage per burst

Precision and Adaptive

  • Base charge time unchange
  • Shots per burst unchanged at seven
  • Slightly increased total damage per burst

Rapid Fire

  • Base charge time decreased from 0.54s to 0.46s
  • Shots per burst increased from seven to nine
  • Increased total damage per burst

These are just the headlines of the changes, there are also changes to Fusion Rifle perks and mods to bring a bit of parity to the weapon type.

Exotic tuning

The last aspect of these changes we want to touch on are changes to Exotic weapons.

Anarchy, the Exotic Grenade Launcher which is basically a requirement for end-game content, is being reigned in. Its magazine and reserve size has been decreased from 26 total to 16 total while damage to bosses has been reduced by 30 percent.

Xenophage’s rate of fire is being reduced from 120RPM to 90RPM which we suspect is going to cause many more folks to forget that Xenophage is a Machine Gun and not a single fire weapon.

Fighting Lion is getting an interesting change. Bungie is changing its reload stat to zero which means it will reload very slowly. That said, reload speed will increase upon damage multiple enemies and, as Proctor puts it, you shouldn’t need to reload Fighting Lion if you’re using it correctly. That is, swapping to a primary weapon and getting a kill to automatically reload the weapon.

Vex Mythoclast is getting a serious amount of attention:

  • PvE damage bonus increased by 40 percent
  • Range stat increased to be near-best in class for High Impact Auto Rifles
  • Increased Stability stat
  • Catalyst reworked to grant stability and damage after a kills
  • Rate of fire increased from 360 to 390
  • Linear Fusion mode charge time reduced from 820 to 833
  • Overcharge stacks aren’t removed on stowing the weapon EXCEPT while in Linear Fusion Rifle mode

Sticking with Auto Rifles, Sweet Business will now have its magazine refilled when picking up Special and Heavy ammo as Primary Ammo is being retired.

Merciless is having its perk retuned to account for fewer shots per burst and the damage penalty for the increased charge rate has been dropped by 40 percent.

Bastion is a bit too crazy at the moment and is having its damage reduced by 15 percent, it’s spread angle increased by 10 percent but it’s PvE damage has been increased by 10 percent with the 15 percent reduction applied.

Finally, Jötunn will have its charge time reduced from 0.82 seconds to 0.78s while its damage per shot has been reduced slightly.

Bungie will be looking at certain weapons and adjust them in the near future. These weapons include Arbalest, Suros Regime, Cryosthesia 77K, Malfeasance and more.

All of these changes, and a few more will be coming to Destiny 2 next week when Season of the [REDACTED] launches on 24th August.
