Boston Dynamics has recreated the ‘Start Me Up’ music video with Spot

If you had a dream / nightmare that a trio of robotic dogs with grabber hands instead of heads would recreate the Start Me Up music video from The Rolling Stones well you’re actually clairvoyant as that has now happened.

Boston Dynamics is back with another video showing off the impressive range of movements of its robots, this time the familiar quadrupedal Spot.

Three Spot Robots did their rendition of the music video which you can see in the embed below.

There are some concessions here. The robots aren’t actually playing the music but are instead, erm, lip-syncing? As this is the foundation of most content on TikTok we won’t grill them too much on that part.

This also isn’t the full music video, just the first section of it.

What’s odd, however, is the choice of the Spot robots in this video. Boston Dynamics also makes the Atlas, a robot that is close to a copy of human physiology with two legs and two arms. They surely would have been a better choice for this project but then you couldn’t use the play on words here with “Spot Me Up”.

It would be absolute crime to talk about a video like this and not mention Compressorhead.

If you thought us mentioning robots making music was too much to ask, well Compressorhead is exactly that.

“If you’ve ever hung out with a few industrial robots you know they can be a bit boring. Not so this crazy bunch! Instead of welding or bending, these guys are crafting 100% pure punk rock! Their (literally) high voltage stage show is sure to make audiences dance. They say genius is close to madness. Well, after a good show, these robots will have more than one screw loose!” reads the about page for the project.

This “band” is a collection of robots that performs live music shows. While Compressorhead can’t do parkour like Atlas or copy dance move like Spot above, their music surely makes up for it.

Seeing is believing so watch the video below to see a performance of Ace of Spades originally by Motörhead.

Something something joke about “heavy metal”.
