Cookie Clicker continues its success as a September top seller

A few months ago we reported on some unusual news when the famous idle game Cookie Clicker announced a paid Steam port after eight years as a free title. Now the move has proven to be a massive success.

This as Steam has released its top sellers list for the month of September. As always this list is determined by what games generated the most revenue in the two weeks after their launch.

Unfortunately the list is provided in a random order and actually changed each time you load the page here. This is Valve trying to conceal exactly how much money its games are bringing in.

We’ve got that list below albeit in alphabetical order:

  • A Total War Saga: Troy
  • Cookie Clicker
  • Deathloop
  • Eastward
  • Final Fantasy IV
  • Gas Station Simulator
  • Hot Wheels Unleashed
  • Life is Strange: True Colors
  • Madness: project Nexus
  • Medieval Dynasty
  • Melty Blood: Type Lumina
  • Minecraft Dungeons
  • NBA 2K22
  • New World
  • Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
  • Potion Craft: Alchemist Simulator
  • Tales of Arise
  • Timberborn
  • Train Simulator 2022
  • World War Z: Aftermath

Despite this lack of information we can at least make some assumptions about sales numbers. The game has a massive 14 798 reviews with 97 percent of them being positive.

This sheer amount of reviews, especially only after its 1st September release, is very uncommon for a smaller game. While Cookie Clicker has its die hard fans and name recognition, it appearing on a list with big hitters like New World, NBA and Deathloop is a real feat.

We can also look at unofficial tracking site SteamSpy which estimates that Cookie Clicker has between 500 000 and 1 000 000 owners. That is a rather large estimate, but it does give us a very rough idea of how well the game is selling.

The low entry price was probably a factor too with Cookie Clicker costing just $4.99 in the USA and localised in South Africa for just R42.

Topping all of this off is the fact that Cookie Clicker is still free. You can play it in your browser here or download it on Android. The Steam version does have some extra features but people choosing to pay for a product when a legal, free version exists is a huge endorsement.
