PlayStation’s Play At Home campaign has seen 60 million games redeemed to date

In April 2020, PlayStation announced an initiative called Play At Home as a way to give back to its gaming community while the pandemic forced most people indoors. In the 18 months since the initiative’s launch more than 60 million games have been redeemed.

Over those 18 months, four separate campaigns have been a part of Play At Home, which has seen content like The Nathan Drake Collection, Horizon: Zero Dawn and 10 different VR titles made available for PlayStation owners to freely access.

Now that we reached the 18 month mark, PlayStation is sharing some numbers and deeming the initiative a success.

“The Play At Home campaign has been an extraordinary success, and we are honored to have played a role in supporting gamers around the world. To date, players have redeemed more than 60 million games from the program. That includes 11 million PS VR titles and more than 30 million games from our indie partners,” enthuses Eric Lempel, SVP and head of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment in a blog post.

“Also a part of the Play At Home initiative, gamers redeemed more than 4 million add-ons and pieces of in-game content for many hit PlayStation titles,” he adds.

While the numbers are impressive, one can’t help but think that SIE is missing the bigger picture here, with access to a greater library of older titles for free, outside of PlayStation Plus, clearly something that would interest its community long-term.

We say this as Xbox Game Pass is the gaming content delivery system at the moment and it’s increasingly becoming an area that PlayStation is losing ground to its competition.

Hopefully something worthwhile and Game Pass-rivalling is on the way.

For now, we only have initiatives like Play At Home.

“The last 18 months have been challenging for all of us. We’re glad that the Play At Home initiative brought joy to our players and helped them to connect with friends and family, safely,” Lempel concludes.
