Indie FPS roguelike Gunfire Reborn to be tweaked following 1.0 release

Recently Gunfire Reborn left Early Access since launching there on 23rd May 2020, but development continues on the title thanks to player feedback.

The FPS roguelike with a distinct mythical animal style is a game we’ve had our eye on for a while now and we bought it as soon as its 1.0 release was available last week. Since then we’ve put in around four hours over the weekend and we have found some problems both technical and design wise, something that developer and publisher Duoyi Games has commented on.

“First of all, in the past couple of days since the release of V1.0, we have revisited and rethought some of the game designs based on your suggestions and feedback. Now that we are tweaking and fixing a variety of major issues, we believe it’s a right time for us to communicate with our community in advance in order to gather more valuable views from you. We admit that the current V1.0 we have delivered does not meet your expectations and we must take actions swiftly to get our game back on track,” the company writes.

It’s telling that a small indie dev is so humble about some launch problems while a behemoth like Battlefield 2042 is an unapologetic mess that continues to sell countless copies.

To that end many changes are planned for Gunfire Reborn including anti-cheat false flags, better multiplayer network performance, reward adjustment and more.

The list of tweaks and optimisations planned can be found here but new players may want to ignore it for now as they may be spoiled by mention of some later game content.

After buying a retail copy ourselves and playing as mentioned above, we’ve having a fun time with this game. It’s a bit rough around the edges but the combat loop and randomised progression has a lot to offer.

We do have some suggestions to tighten things up such as cutting down on backtracking and some weapon rebalancing. Right now, at least for us, the Aura of Venom gun seems far and away the best gun in the game with insane burst damage and the ability to melt most enemies with a single mag dump.

Many other weapons, especially the heavy weapons which slow your character down and take a lifetime to reload, feel bad to use and completely underpowered.

We will be passing along our suggestions as requested by Duoyi Games for review and possible integration into the game, something that the company asks that all players do.

If we only get one wish its to at least double the movement speed in this game. The player character, even with a dash ability, feels like it’s walking through wet concrete at all times and it really slows the pace of the entire game down.

Despite our recommendations for fixes we still think it’s worth the price of admission, which is just R130 usually but discounted to R97.50 (25 percent off) until 1st December.

We’re not the only ones who feel positively about this game despite its foibles as, on Steam, it has a rather large amount of positive reviews. Of the 47 094 total reviews left so far, 93 percent of them are positive. This leaves Gunfire Reborn with a “Very Positive” rating on Valve’s store.
