A mondegreen is a misheard song lyrics such as Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind in which the line “the answer my friend” is often misheard as “the ants are my friend”.
Hopefully monegreens will become less frequent as Spotify has incorporated lyrics into its apps for smartphones, desktop and its SpotifyTV app.
The streaming platform has partnered with Musixmatch and lyrics are available to all users whether you’re a free or Premium subscriber.
We’ve had a look at the lyrics and the implementation is rather good though you can see this is a new feature. We say this because some tracks feature lyrics and others don’t. Tracks that do feature lyrics are even more of a mixed bag as some lyrics are synchronised to the track while others aren’t.
Listeners can also share lyrics to third party platforms via the Spotify mobile app.
As for consoles, Spotify mentions the lyric feature is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox One. Xbox Series X|S isn’t mentioned.

Spotify mobile app
- Tap on the “Now Playing View” on a song.
- While listening, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
- You’ll see track lyrics that scroll in real time as the song is playing
Spotify desktop app
- From the “Now Playing” bar click the microphone icon (when available) to see lyrics while a song is playing.
SpotifyTV app
- Open the “Now Playing View” on a song.
- Navigate to the right corner to the “lyrics button” and select if you want to enable Lyrics.
