PlayStation and Xbox heads express concern about Activision Blizzard saga

The situation at Activision Blizzard has gone from bad to worse this week when a report by The Wall Street Journal claimed that the company’s chief executive officer Bobby Kotick, had not only known about sexual harassment at the firm but worked to protect accused abusers.

As a result, Activision Blizzard’s share price has suffered, spiralling downward consistently throughout the week. Even shareholders of the firm have called for Kotick to leave or be removed.

While the share price fell and shareholders spoke out, other game industry heavyweights spoke out as well. On Wednesday, PlayStation chief executive officer Jim Ryan reportedly spoke out as well.

In a report by Bloomberg, it is said that Ryan sent an email to employees in which he said he was “disheartened and frankly stunned to read” the report from The Wall Street Journal. Adding to that, the PlayStation head said that Activision Blizzard had done nothing to address the culture of harassment and discrimination at the firm.

“We outreached to Activision immediately after the article was published to express our deep concern and to ask how they plan to address the claims made in the article,” Ryan wrote. “We do not believe their statements of response properly address the situation”.

The PlayStation head is not alone as Xbox chief executive officer Phil Spencer, also emailed staff stating he was deeply disturbed and troubled by the events brought to light this week.

“This type of behavior has no place in our industry,” Spencer said. Furthermore, Bloomberg reports that Spencer will be taking action although no additional details are provided.

While Activision Blizzard is able to distribute games on PC through the Blizzard Battle.net app, on console it has to tow the line Xbox and PlayStation set for it. With both of these CEOs seemingly disgusted by the actions of Kotick and other Activision Blizzard management, we’re interested to see what action, if any, is taken against the firm.

While it may be easy to call for PlayStation and Xbox to remove Activision Blizzard games from those platforms we don’t think that’s a good idea as it punishes the innocent developers who poured their lives into those games.

As of time of writing Bobby Kotick is still CEO at Activision Blizzard but calls for his resignation grow louder everyday. As of 20:00 on Thursday, 500 Activision Blizzard employees had signed a petition calling for Kotick’s resignation.
