Tiny Tina Borderlands 2 DLC is now a standalone, free game

Well here’s a weird bit of advertising. Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, a piece of DLC for Borderlands 2 released in 2013, has been turned into a standalone game that you can get for free. Kinda.

The game is free on PC through the Epic Games Store until 16th November. After this time, and on all other platforms, it is a regular game you will have to pay money for.

The amount of money is R179 in South Africa which is rather steep given the age of this content and its length.

That R179 is the same price for the game across all the platforms which includes PC (Epic Games Store and Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

Returning to the topic of advertising this is all in service towards generating hype for the upcoming game Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands which is slated for release on 25th March 2022.

This is why Assault on Dragon Keep now has the subtitle “A Wonderlands One-shot Adventure”.

We’re not entirely sure this is the best marketing decision as players may confuse Assault on Dragon Keep as some kind of demo for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, and that’s an easy mistake to make given the naming structure here.

This would be rather disastrous as we had a quick play of Assault on Dragon Keep and it sure feels like a very old piece of software. Borderlands 2 is still a great game and there’s fun to be had in it and this now standalone, but after playing Borderlands 3 again recently it’s difficult to go back to this stiffer, less enjoyable experience.

There’s also the fact that this isn’t a demo because you have to pay for it if you’re on console or show up late to the party after the free period ends on 16th November.

It’s like Gearbox wants to have its cake and eat it to by both reminding people of the new game launching next year but also making some easy money by recycling old content.
