Xbox celebrates 20th birthday by adding 70-plus titles to backwards compatible library

Microsoft is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Xbox this week, with one of the presents it’s giving back to its community being more backwards compatible titles. Over 70 to be precise, with original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles now added to the library for Xbox One and Series X|S.

While Game Pass gets a lot of the plaudits for Microsoft’s gaming division of late, backwards compatibility is one area the company has thrived too, having begun it in earnest in 2015.

The full list of backwards compatible titles currently available, can be viewed here, but Xbox has highlighted some of the notable new additions as:

  • “The entire Max Payne series and the F.E.A.R. franchise are now playable on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles for the very first time.
  • The entire Skate franchise is now complete with the addition of Skate 2 and playable on both Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles.
  • We also heard the desire for more original Xbox titles to be added to the catalog. We are pleased to announce we were able to bring more than 20+ original Xbox titles to an entire new generation of gamers, including Dead or Alive UltimateStar Wars: Jedi Knight IIStar Wars: Starfighter, and Otogi franchises.”

Along with making older games available on current-gen hardware, Xbox has pointed out that some visuals improvements have been added to the mix too. To that end, the titles added this week will feature Auto HDR functionality if you have a compatible display.

A handful of titles have also been optimised to receive FPS boost, with 11 in total that will have the ability to double the original frame rate to up to 60fps. “FPS Boost is rolling out to 33 titles via Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) that were previously enhanced on Xbox Series X|S including Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and The Evil Within 2,” adds Microsoft.

There’s likely more in store as Xbox continues to celebrate the milestone birthday.
